About QPR Calculator

Understanding the Wellesley Wine Press methodology

What is QPR?

QPR stands for Quality-to-Price Ratio - a metric that helps identify wines offering the best value for money. A higher QPR indicates better value: you're getting more quality per dollar spent.

This calculator uses the official Wellesley Wine Press QPR formula, developed by one of the wine industry's most respected value-focused publications.

The wwpQPR Formula

QPR = 2^((Rating - 90) / 3) ÷ (Price / 20)
  • Rating: Professional wine score (typically 80-100 point scale)
  • Price: Retail price in USD
  • Exponential scaling: Higher ratings increase QPR exponentially, reflecting the rarity of exceptional wines

Understanding QPR Values

QPR ≥ 1.5Excellent Value
QPR 1.0 - 1.49Good Value
QPR < 1.0Below Average Value

Smart Rating Averages

Our calculator offers unique "Smart Averages" that account for critic scoring tendencies:

Some critics consistently score wines lower or higher than others. Understanding this helps find better values.

  • Conservative Critics Only:

Uses only Wine Spectator and Decanter - critics who typically score wines lower than average. Since they're tougher graders, their high scores indicate exceptional value.

  • Moderate Critics Only:

Uses critics with balanced scoring patterns (Robert Parker, Jeb Dunnuck, Vinous, Wine Enthusiast) - provides a good baseline for typical market perception.

  • Conservative Focus (2x Weight):

Gives double weight to conservative critics' scores. Best for finding hidden gems that tough critics rate highly but may be undervalued by the market.

Special Considerations

  • 375ml Bottles: Prices are automatically doubled for half-bottles to ensure fair QPR comparison with standard 750ml bottles
  • Vintage Warnings: Wines over 20 years old are flagged as potentially past their drinking window for Pinot Noir
  • Data Source: Wine data is scraped from K&L Wines, one of America's premier wine retailers

The wwpQPR formula and methodology were developed by The Wellesley Wine Press. This calculator applies their formula to current wine inventory for real-time value analysis.
